Erectile dysfunction is about more than just the inability to achieve an erection. It’s also about how hard your erections normally get and how long the erection lasts to have satisfactory sexual intercourse. ED is really about how you feel about your sex life and much of it has to do with how hard your erections get.
If you are having trouble getting or keeping a stiff erection, talk to your doctor. The doctor will measure the hardness of your erections using the Erection Hardness Score. This unit of measurement can determine the firmness of your penis.
1: Penis does not enlarge
2: Penis is larger, but not hard
3: Penis is hard, but not hard enough for penetration
4: Penis is hard enough for penetration, but not completely hard
5: Penis is completely hard and fully rigid
The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire is a more comprehensive assessment tool. Many doctors use a simplified version of the International Index of Erectile Function which only has five questions.
- How confident are you that you can get and keep an erection?
- When you get an erection, how often are your erections hard enough for penetration?
- Is it difficult to maintain your erection after you’ve penetrated your partner?
- Are you able to maintain your erection to ejaculation?
- How often is sex “satisfactory” for you?
It’s not a perfect method of assessment, but lets you understand the difference between just getting an erection and keeping it firm enough for sexual intercourse.
Why does a Firm Erection Matter?
The hardness and frequency of your erections are important indicators of your overall health. The blood vessels in the penis are smaller than arteries in other parts of your body, so any problems in the arteries will sometimes show up as erectile dysfunction before the actual cause appears.
